“In your fourth year at the Academy of the Great Wizard Eleutheria, you’re starting to get bored. You’ve learned a lot about magic, the power of reason, and martial arts. Now you’re looking for a challenge.
You’ve heard stories about the city of Darkblood, to the east, which is apparently ruled by a great but evil Mage. You recall that Eleutheria had mentioned this Mage only once, briefly, saying that he was powerful and terrible, and nearly on par with Eleutheria himself. The ruler of Darkblood was once one of the Great Mages, but he was exiled when he used his magic and power to plunder entire cities and steal treasures. He now lives in a building in Darkblood called the Tower of Terror.
That night, pack your spellbook and enough food and drink for five meals, and set out for Darkblood. What will you find in that cursed city, a den of evil and corruption? It’s time to find out…

In the 1980s, there was a boom in so-called “game books”—interactive books, usually in the fantasy genre, in which the reader was required to make choices and solve puzzles to reach the last page.
PROTEUS, a magazine published in the United Kingdom from 1984 to 1988, featured a complete interactive adventure to play in every issue: these were simple dungeon crawls, treasure hunts full of oddities, strange puzzles, and absurd monsters.
The PROTEUS adventures weren’t masterpieces, but they were fun and damn hard: there were often dozens of items to find in order to complete the mission and defeat the final monster, and more often than not, the one that mattered was missing; Furthermore, it was essential to draw maps of the dungeons so as not to get lost in the paragraphs, but these maps often… didn’t add up.
In short: lots of fun for us kids from the analog era!
