GROTTEN: 1-Bit Nell’Oscurità is a minimalist dungeon crawler role-playing game in which you must go inside a dungeon, tile by tile to defeat its monsters until you meet one of 10 bosses in the depths!
Descend into the bowels of a dark and immediate dungeon, inspired by the “1-bit dark fantasy” aesthetic and innovative mechanics of Mörk Borg. Grotten is a dark, minimalist experience designed for quick, intense, atmosphere-filled sessions.
Strengths:
Compact and sleek format: a 20-page zine in a 20 × 20 cm format, stapled and printed on matte paper with black cover, perfect for carrying with you at all times.
Physical tiles and tokens: made on 350 g cardboard with folding marks, they trace the OSR tradition of DIY and make the game map a tactile and immediate experience.
No preparation required: just draw a tile, flip it over, and start random rolls to define rooms, traps, creatures, loot–until the final boss confrontation.
Basic rules, effective gameplay: the character is described by only four statistics. You roll d20s for actions and combat, against a fixed Difficulty Grade. After defeating four enemies or a boss, you gain experience.
Maximum versatility: ideal for solitary, co-operative play, with or without a Game Master; can also become a plug-and-play module for insertion into existing fantasy campaigns.
