Token perfectly captures what we love most about fairy tales in which a hero confronts a monster: the initial mystery and fear of the unknown gradually give way to understanding, familiarity, and empathy.

TOKEN is a GMless game, meaning both players take turns rolling dice and describing the world as their characters face its challenges. Each character must balance the risk of losing themselves with the desire to find the other, all while surviving the dangers of the Forest.

The world of TOKEN is created by the players themselves, who work together to build a perilous landscape filled with strange horrors before setting out in search of one another. Along the way, they overcome challenges and uncover new and unsettling aspects of the world around them. A collection of tables allows you to expand the setting beyond the Forest if you wish.

Character creation in TOKEN is quick and intuitive, using a series of expanded tables to determine the Past that haunts you, your Identity as the Seeker, or your monstrous Traits as the Inhabitant. Both characters are driven by an Instinct—a powerful motivation that compels them to seek each other out. This Instinct evolves throughout the story and ultimately comes into play during the game’s epilogue. Scars represent both the physical wounds suffered during the journey and the emotional wounds carried from the past. Spells are dangerous magical powers available to both characters. Finally, each character keeps a Secret about their shared past, revealed during the final scene of the game, creating one last dramatic opportunity to shape how the story ends.
